How to Buy and Sell Safely on Local Classifieds
Published October 2026Local classifieds are one of the best ways to find a bargain or clear out things you no longer need. They also attract a few bad actors. These habits keep almost every deal safe.
Meet in a public place
Pick a busy, well-lit spot such as a store entrance, a cafe or the parking lot of a police station. Many police departments offer marked "safe exchange" areas. Avoid inviting strangers to your home, and avoid going to theirs for your first meeting.
Bring someone, or tell someone
Take a friend if you can. If not, tell someone where you are going, who you are meeting and when you expect to be back. Keep your phone charged.
Inspect before you pay
Test electronics, check the car's paperwork and look at an item in daylight. If a seller will not let you check what you are buying, walk away.
Prefer cash in person for small deals
For everyday items, cash handed over in person after you inspect the item is simplest. For larger amounts, meet at your bank so the money can be verified on the spot.
Red flags that usually mean a scam
- The price is far below what similar items sell for.
- The person wants you to pay or send a deposit before you have seen the item.
- They ask for gift cards, wire transfers or payment apps for a stranger.
- They send a check for more than the price and ask you to refund the difference.
- They push you to move the conversation to another app straight away, or say they cannot meet because they are "traveling".
- Someone asks for a code sent to your phone. Never share it.
Selling: protect yourself too
Do not ship an item before the payment has fully cleared, and be careful with overpayment offers. Share only what you need to: a first name and a phone number or in-app chat are enough. Keep your home address out of your ad.
Use the tools on YaaPing
Check the poster's profile and ratings before you meet, keep your conversation in the in-app chat so there is a record, and use the report button on any ad that looks wrong. We review reports and remove rule-breaking content.
Trust your instincts. If something feels off, you can always say no and go home.
