How to Sell a Used Car Privately and Get a Fair Price
Published October 2026Selling privately usually brings a better price than a trade-in, but you do the work yourself. Here is how to make it smooth.
Get your paperwork ready
Find the title or ownership document, service records, and any loan payoff details. Rules differ by state or country, so check your local motor vehicle office for what a transfer requires.
Clean it and fix the small things
A wash, vacuum and clear dashboard make a car look cared for. Replace burnt-out bulbs and top up fluids. Small fixes cost little and help buyers trust the car.
Price it with real comparisons
Search for the same make, model, year and similar mileage near you. Price close to the middle of the range, or slightly higher if you are happy to negotiate. Be honest about condition.
Photograph it well
Take photos in daylight: all four corners, the interior, the dashboard with the mileage showing, the engine bay, tires and any damage.
Write a clear ad
Include year, make, model, mileage, number of owners, service history, known issues and why you are selling. Say whether the price is firm.
Handle test drives safely
- Meet in a public place and bring a friend.
- Check the driver's license before handing over keys and ride along.
- Do not leave a buyer alone with the car.
Close the sale carefully
For larger amounts, complete the deal at your bank so the payment can be verified. Write a bill of sale with both names, the date, price and "sold as is" if that applies. Hand over the keys and paperwork only after you have the money, then notify your motor vehicle office and cancel your insurance on the car.
