Common Classified Ad Scams and How to Spot Them
Published October 2026Most people on local classifieds are honest, but scams follow a few patterns. Knowing them makes you hard to fool.
The overpayment check
A "buyer" sends a check for more than your price and asks you to refund the difference. The check later bounces and you lose the money. Never refund an overpayment.
The deposit for a home you cannot see
A rental at a very low price, an owner who is "abroad", and a request for a deposit before a viewing. Do not pay until you have been inside and met the landlord.
The fake shipping buyer
Someone offers to buy without seeing the item and asks for a link, a code or your details so a "courier" can collect it. Stick to in-person sales for local ads.
The code request
A buyer says they need to confirm you are real and asks for a code sent to your phone. That code can take over your accounts. Never share it.
Too good to be true
Brand-new phones, cars and designer goods at half price are almost always scams or stolen goods.
Job ads that charge you
Real employers do not charge for applications, training or equipment. Be careful with offers of high pay for easy work.
